Tarantula Hawk Wasp (Pepsis thisbe)

This is a large wasp with curled antennae and a very painful sting, classified in the family Pompilidae. It stings and paralyzes tarantulas to serve as food for its developing young. It was photographed feeding in a prickly pear cactus flower bud in Oatman, Arizona. This photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P520 camera on January 5, 2015.
